Estudios del territorio

Estudios del territorio is a series of four graphite drawings on paper, each measuring 25 x 25 inches, that delve into the topographic landscape of the city of Mérida, Venezuela not merely as a geographical record, but as a sensitive exploration of the sublime hidden within its folds and geological fractures.

These works do not aim to simply map the land, but to translate it: to capture, through lines and shadows, the silent tension between vastness and fragility. Through the act of drawing, the terrain is revealed not only as physical form, but as an emotional imprint a topography of the soul.

Each piece examines the geomorphological structure of the region, transforming spatial views into two-dimensional abstractions that shift between realism and interpretation. In this visual translation, the mountain and the landform become portals to deeper contemplation, where drawing becomes a means of reaching the intangible.

Beyond portraying the topography of Mérida, Studies of the Territory proposes new geographies: macroscopic landscapes that, when observed, evoke reflections on the fragility of nature, the persistence of memory, and the possibility of perceiving land from a renewed scale not only physical, but emotional.

In this pursuit, drawing becomes a liminal space, where the visible touches the invisible, and where the viewer is invited not just to observe, but to feel the quiet tremor of the sublime within the very matter of the earth.
